This application provides a way to explore the McKeldin Library map collection online. The collection contains over 200,000 items, including maps, relief models, and atlases. There are multiple ways to begin your exploration and discovery process.
Below is an overview of the basic map controls. The zoom buttons allow you to zoom in or out. Movement is primarily controlled through the pan and rotate buttons, which can be toggled on or off as needed. Pan allows you to move around the scene. Rotate allows you to change your viewing angle. The direction button shows where north is in relation to your current viewing angle. Finally, the home button allows you to return to the default starting viewing angle and zoom as desired.
You can use the controls to move around the scene and click on individual features to get an idea of the categories and ranges of the maps contained within. However, the quickest and easiest way to find specific types of maps is to use the search functionality. This can be accessed by clicking on the search button, shown below.
The search menu will open. Choose a search option and then select it with its respective button at left. Search options are map category (e.g., topographic, nautical) and relevant subcategory if applicable, cabinet number, and geographic location. Note: if you choose the latter option, use full words, not abbreviations (e.g., 'United States' instead of 'USA'). Then, click on the "Search the collection" button. The "Clear selection" button may be used to clear any highlights in the 3D map and return to the default (home) view.
Upon clicking the search button, cabinets with relevant results to your query will be highlighted in yellow. In the sidebar, result cards for each drawer will appear. You can click on each of these to zoom to the drawer; upon clicking, the yellow highlights will be replaced with a red highlight for the selected drawer only. A relevant popup containing information about the selected feature will also open.
NOTE: on mobile devices, result card functionality is not available.
Popups can also be opened manually. Refer to the image below for a guide to the information contained in the popup.
We hope that this application is useful to you, and please enjoy exploring the collection. More information about us and a link to our suggestion box can be found in the "More Info" popup.
This project serves to provide the public with a tool to explore the University of Maryland's vast, largely uncatalogued map collection (200,000+ maps) in an interactive way. It served as a capstone for my studies in the MS in GIS program at the University of Maryland. It sought to combine the knowledge I gained with the practical experience gleaned through more than two years of indoors GIS-related work, much of it involving 3D GIS. I want to thank Milan Budhathoki, William Definbaugh, Jim Nealis, and perhaps most importantly, the Arizona State University's Map and Geospatial Hub, whose 3D Explorer project served as a main inspiration for my own. I also want to thank my professors (Dr. Ma, Dr. Tao, and Dr. Resop) for their kind and unwavering support through my year in the program.
